Built on reputation, driven by perfection

Our Team

Matt Ward
Director

Hi, I'm Matthew Ward the managing director at True Roots Carpentry and Joinery.

I've been working within carpentry in the construction industry for 12 years. Having formerly worked for two house building companies I have seen the best way to carry out a job and the ways to best avoid. I have a huge passion to see the face of construction changed; it frustrates me seeing tradesmen getting a bad name when it is the few that let others down. So with my awesome team, together we collaborate to work out the best way to create that 'wow' factor in all of our client's homes or workplaces.

I have a team that share my desire and my passion for high-quality craftsmanship, but also a market-leading service that never leaves clients in the dark and makes everything we do transparent from the get-go.

I believe we can always be better and always find more ways to improve.

Creativity and a family team are at the heart of True Roots.

I look forward to meeting you soon

Matthew

Kath Bennett
Office Manager

Kath has been with us for 3 years now and originally joined us on a part-time basis, but has since increased to full-time as the need for our systems to be streamlined in the office became more clear!

She brings a lot of fun and laughter to the office on a regular basis, as well as top-notch cookies and cake! The team wishes she took orders!

Her favourite part of the job is working with a loyal and hard-working and close-knit team.

Interesting fact- she has just begun a course on sign language of which she is loving!

**Side note- Matt believes she has the patience of a saint when dealing with him there and then again she is mum and has plenty of practice

Trevor Barnacle
Contract Manager

Trevor is our contract manager and his focus is to streamline the work in our pipeline as well as liaise with all clients on their projects from start to finish.

His hobbies include Chess, Petanque and playing the guitar and Golf badly. He also enjoys gardening and long walks with his wife and dog Monty.

In his words:
"I married my childhood sweetheart at 22 years old and we have a lovely daughter who we are both very proud of"

My working life began in the bar fitting industry and progressed through several areas of the woodworking business from bench work through to management roles.

My new role as contract manager even though in its early stages is showing its rewards to me personally by allowing me to have a large input into the developing path the business is taking. The team are all committed to the satisfaction of our clients and success of the company with no exception.

Fun fact: At the age of 50 my life long friend and I decided to climb Ben Nevis. We did so in 7 foot of snow and temperatures of -15 degrees".

Cieran Calter
Carpenter

Cieran is our youngest carpenter on the team.

Cieran joined the team in 2016 to finish off his apprenticeship that he had already started and went on to qualify as a carpenter in 2018. He has since gone from strength to strength as he perfects his craft!

In his words "My favourite parts about my job is that I could be fitting a staircase one day and making bespoke storage units the next. The variety and the people I work with are what makes the job!"

Cieran is quite the Dr Dolittle with a horse, parrot and two British bulldogs to keep him occupied. He loves spending time with his family and these animals! He has recently taken to riding the horse and executing perfect jumps!

Oh- and to add to this he loves coming home to open a cold beer and jump in the hot tub sounds like a dream!

To see Cieran grow at True Roots has been humbling yet exciting to see what the future has in store for him.
Ryan Mueller
1st Year Apprentice

Ryan is our newest and youngest member of our team

Ryan is studying an apprenticeship at Leicester college in carpentry and has already shown great promise in the time that he has been with us.

Fun fact about Ryan: his hair isn't naturally curly, he lost a dare and as a result, had to have it permed and keep it for a whole year!

Ryan also completed his Duke of Edinburgh award achieving a bronze medal. His coffee making skills make him a firm favourite within the workshop!

Watch this space- this young man is going to be one very good craftsman in the years to come!

Alex Baraclough
Senior Carpenter

Alex has been in the construction industry for 12 years and joined True Roots with a thirst to learn, grow, and add value to our team.

He has a clear ability to being able to be creative in all areas of his work.

Since joining the team he has brought, many many times of laughter and time and time again proves himself to be someone who is diligent, hard-working and keen to better himself.

In his words-" My role at True Roots involves:
- working to perfect my craft within the carpentry industry
- provide a first-class service/product/finish for the customer
- uphold the True Roots values and enhance the company's reputation.
The favourite part of my job is waking up every morning knowing I'm going to be doing a job I love and enjoy, working with such a great talented team, making customer relations, and then the customer satisfaction at the end of it."

Fun fact- Alex has successfully completed many pub eating challenges and is known by the team as the Cookie Monster- for obvious reasons!

Alex is a keen footballer both in supporting and watching Leicester City but also playing regularly too.
Jon Davison
Adult Apprentice
Jon joins us in a non-traditional role as our first adult apprentice. Jon already has a varied background, having previously spent his twenties working up to being a marketing manager and then in his thirties as an English teacher.

Jon said of his apprentice, "I have always been hands-on and reached a stage whereby I wanted to have a practical and active job, away from a screen and one that would be creative and challenging with variety everyday. When I met Matt and Trevor and saw the workshop, I knew this was the company that I wanted to train for my apprenticeship with"

Outside of work, Jon spends his winter watching football, his summer listening to cricket, and the rest of his time with his wife, daughter and dog.

Arran Hill
Senior Carpenter and Team Leader

Arran has been a part of the team for 3 years now and brought with him a vast array of experience and knowledge from his 23 years career in the industry. His experience has ranged from working for a company through his apprenticeship and after, but also working for himself for the majority of those 22 years.

In Arran's words ' I enjoy all aspects of the job, but the thing I enjoy most is working with the best team out there; that all pull together and add their ideas for ongoing projects. I would say we're all friends as well as colleagues"

Arran enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching Leicester Tigers- as a season ticket holder, gardening, and cooking ( we are yet to try his own recipe of Bombay spicy potatoes that we hear about.... a lot!)

Arran has a lot of patience and is always keen to help anyone and everyone; from educating young trainees to talking to our client's through the processes in which we will be carrying out their installation.

A true asset and a great leader at True Roots!
Lee Whymant
Bench Joiner
With a background including machining high end point of sale units for the retail industry, Lee is a recent addition to True Roots and represents our continued growth and development as we move into designing and crafting bespoke joinery from our workshop.

Lee is an expert craftsman, with more than twenty years of experience designing, constructing and finishing cabinets and furniture for commercial and domestic clients across Leicestershire.

Lee sees his role as providing solutions to suit a client's brief. and says that "the favourite part of my job is the satisfaction I get from taking a raw piece of material and machining and crafting it to a functional, practical and attractive piece of bespoke furniture that suits our client's home"

Away from the workshop Lee is something of an enigma. who likes to split his time between scented candles and football, and he 'relaxes' as a coach for his daughter's team.
